Why this name?
The name of this street was given in 1864 in tribute to Jean Joseph Gustave Cler, general who died during the Battle of Magenta five years earlier. This soldier from Jura was particularly distinguished at the Battle of Alma in Crimea. Rue Cler used to be called rue Neuve-de-l’Eglise and then rue de l’Eglise.
